ABOUT
CAROLYN THOMAS
UNFORGETTABLE
HERO
Carolyn Thomas
survived a point-blank gunshot to the face by
her abusive ex-boyfriend on December 5,
2003. Not expected to live, she
miraculously pulled through but suffered
catastrophic facial injuries as well as the
tragic loss of her mother, also shot by
Carolyns abuser. In August 2004,
Carolyn was referred to the National
Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Face to
Face Program and Give Back A Smile Program,
and her journey toward recovery began.
Carolyn underwent
approximately 11 reconstructive surgeries at
Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas, from
2005 to 2006. Her primary surgeon was Dr.
Eugene Alford, Director of ALFORD ENT and
FACIAL PLASTIC SURGERY in Houston. Dr.
Alford orchestrated a team of specialists to
perform the reconstructive surgeries and
provide medical treatment at no cost to
Carolyn.
Today, Carolyn is
continuing to help transform herself and
others, promoting a message of taking back
ones power from the abuser and
reclaiming ones independence and
freedom. Through her experience, Carolyn
has discovered her life purpose, which is to
tell her story of domestic violence in order
to increase awareness, educate and empower
others, especially victims and survivors of
domestic violence.
Carolyn's miraculous,
courageous, powerful and inspirational story
has touched so many that media outlets
continue to cover her progress and revisit
her story as a means of promoting domestic
abuse prevention. People all over the
United States, Europe, and the West Indies
have responded to her message, moved by her
choice to share the intimate details of her
life with strangers. When she appeared
on The Insider, more than 1,500 e-mails
poured in the most the show had ever
received in response to a segment.
Carolyn symbolizes
strength, passion and hope. As a speaker, she
provides not only the inspirational story of
her life but also practical tips for
recognizing the signs of domestic abuse and
advice for getting out of an abusive
situation. You will be edified and
profoundly affected by the courageous journey
of this Unforgettable Hero
